Our History

The United Horsemen's Association

In November of 1984, two men by the names Joe Hudson and Walt Jenkins were invited to participate in one of the many trail rides in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. After a weekend of great fun and adventure, Joe and Walt decided to carve out plans for coordinating a trail ride of their own. Under their direction, in May, 1985 twelve distinguished riders participated in a weekend trail ride. Because the event was such an exhilarating experience of true brotherhood, sisterhood, and horsemenship, it served as the ultimate inspiration for a new organization; an organization where true horsemen can come together as brothers and sisters to share the love of horses, to enjoy the adventures of riding, and to foster and promote equestrian activities throughout the Washington D.C, Maryland, and Virginia areas. Thus the United Horsemen's Association was established.
Today the United Horsemen's Association participates in the following Events:
  • The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo
  • Parades
  • Community Events
  • Church and School Activities
  • General Pleasure Riding Events
  • The Promotion of Best Practices in Horse Health & Care
  • Introducing enthusiasts to horses

A Team Effort
A lot has changed---both in physical and cultural terms---in the last century since this photo was taken. These wagons loaded with wood are being driven into Fredericksburg VA on a dirt road that is now Lafayette Boulevard. They are crossing Hazel Run. The year is 1901.
*Photo is from Town and Country Magazine Feb. 1996.
